When they return early

How to respond to an early exit without making it a bigger deal than it is.

An early return means the person approached the place, assessed the situation, and made a decision. That is contact with the outside world and it counts as a logged outing.

The most useful response is usually brief and factual. Avoid turning the moment into a debrief or a pep talk. Something like "you went there and paid attention to what you needed" keeps the door open without adding pressure.

If they want to discuss it later, ask what would make the same place more workable next time — time of day, a shorter visit, a different entrance. Practical questions are more useful than reassurance.
