Why avoidance grows anxiety

The feedback loop that makes ordinary places feel narrower over time.

Avoidance lowers discomfort quickly, which is why it persists. The cost is that the brain may conclude a place was only tolerable because it was avoided. Over time, ordinary routes and errands can start to feel off-limits.

Outings — even short or incomplete ones — give the brain updated information. They do not need to be long, impressive, or comfortable to be useful. A brief visit, a pause at the door, or turning around after trying all contribute new data.

Your role as a supporter is not to argue someone out of fear. It is to make the next step concrete, achievable, and optional enough that it can actually happen.
